Author’s Note:

This is a work of non-fiction, and I have endeavored to tell the truth as I re- member it as best I can. But it is also a memoir, and memories, sadly, are flawed and inconsistent things. (Mine is notable in this regard.) I apologize in advance for any errors in the text, and please believe me when I say such errors are in the details only, and do not effect the overall spirit.

This book first found life as a web log, and the first six entries were written and posted while I was in Cuba. These entries covered the time frame of January 18th to March 17th, 2008, and make up Part I of the book. The second section, which covers March 17th – April 20th, was written between May and December 2008 in the United States.

In the last days before returning to the United States, I swapped photos with a number of other students in the Cuba program.  Consequently, I have no idea which photos are mine and which were taken by other people.  I am nearly certain I have used photos on this site that were taken not by me, but by my friends. If you happen to notice one of your photos here, please let me know so I can attribute it to you or take it down.
